"QUESTION:
What causes an element to be placed into a stranded state?

ANSWER:
An element is transitioned into a stranded state when a defunct operation is executed against a directory that contains elements who have a status of (member).

Example:
If you want do defunct Dir1 and all its contents, you will just need to defunct Dir1. If any of the elements within Dir1 have a status of (member) as shown below. That element will be placed into the stranded filter. If both files had a status of (backed), the defunct operation would complete w/o placing any files into the stranded filter.

Dir1
|
foo.c (backed)
bar.h (member)

To remove any elements from the stranded view, you can select the element(s) and promote or purge the element.
