automate and download results with BoundsChecker

Problem:

How can I set up BoundsChecker (Error Detection) for automation and getting a file of the results pane?

Resolution:

This pertains to all versions of BoundsChecker since 8.0.

SETTING UP BOUNDSCHECKER FOR AUTOMATION:

* Set your settings for your executable:

  1. Start standalone BC (Start menu, Programs, Compuware DevPartner/BoundsChecker, Error Detection).
  2. From the File menu, choose open: "%windir%\system32\notepad.exe".
  3. From the Program menu, choose Settings, and set your settings as desired.
  4. Click OK on the Settings dialog.
  5. Exit the standalone BC.

An example batch file can be downloaded from the link below. Rename it to run_notepad_with_bc.bat if you want to try it on your machine. Essentially, it does the following for you.

* Setup path's:

- put bc.exe on the PATH.

- put any other needed executables on the PATH

* Generate a log file:

- In DOS, execute notepad.exe using bc.exe on the command line and have it generate a log file

- exercise notepad.exe

- exit notepad.exe

* Dump the results log:

- use ...\Program Files\Common Files\Compuware

MShared\*\aedmsgdump.exe to dump results.dpbcl
