The server could not be located. Make sure it is running and restart

Problem:

When starting the TrackRecord client (TRCS32.EXE), I get the following error:  "The server could not be located.  Make sure it is running and restart"

Resolution:

This error will occur when the TrackRecord client is unable to communicate with the FairCom server.  Here are some tips to troubleshoot the issue:

1.  The FairCom server may not be started.  If you are running the FairCom server on an NT machine, start program CTSRVR.EXE.  If running on Novell NetWare, load CTSRVR.NLM.

If FairCom is running as a service on NT, shut down the service and make sure that you can access the server when it is running as an application.  If you cannot access the server when running as an application, then you will not be able to access the service.

2.  If the FairCom server is up and running, please check the following:

A.  On the users local workstation in the TrackRecord program directory, locate and open text file TR.INI.  Check the variable "serverName=" and make sure that it is the correct DNS name of the file server where FairCom is running.

B.  You must be able to PING the sever using the DNS name.  Open a DOS command box, and type "ping <server name>".  You should get a reply form the file server.  If you do not, then either the file server is not accessible (contact your local administrator) or DNS has not been properly configured for your workstation.  If you can ping the IP address for the server, see the TrackRecord Client Server Install Guide for information on how to configure your local HOSTS file.

C.  At this point, if the server is up and running and you can ping the DNS name of the server in the TR.INI file, then there may be a problem with the running FairCom server.  Please do the following:

- Shut down the FairCom server

- From the FairCom server directory, delete all files ending in .FCS.  These FairCom configuration files are automatically generated from the CTSRVR.CFG file.  They will automatically be recreated the next time you start the FairCom server

- Using a text editor, from the FairCom directory, open text file CTSRVR.CFG.  Verify that you have the following information in your CTSRVR.CFG file.  If you do not, please modify the file to contain the following.

For an NT server running TCP/IP you should ONLY have the following 4 lines.  Delete any others which may exist:

COMM_PROTOCOL F_TCPIP

COMM_PROTOCOL FSHAREMM

COMPATIBILITY WTHRU_UPDFLG

PAGE_SIZE 4096

For an NT server running NetBios you should ONLY have the following 4 lines.  Delete any others which may exist:

COMM_PROTOCOL FNETBIOS

COMM_PROTOCOL FSHAREMM

COMPATIBILITY WTHRU_UPDFLG

PAGE_SIZE 4096

For a NetWare server running SPX (the only protocol supported by FairCom), you should ONLY have the following 2 lines.  Delete any others which may exist:

COMPATIBILITY WTHRU_UPDFLG

PAGE_SIZE 4096

NOTE: TrackRecord 4.x and below is no longer supported.
