Problem:

Performance Analysis not able to profile a simple Windows Console Application.  “Waiting to start” message is shown in VS2008SP1 Output Window and it times out afterwards with no session file created.

Symptoms:
 
1)      Registry settings are OK and the 2 DPS services (DevPartner Control Service and the DevPartner Injection Service) are running
2)      ED (using proper instrumentation settings) not being able to profile a simple Windows Console Application
3)      Injector COM error dialog is displayed when running ED.
4)      Performance Analysis (using proper instrumentation settings) not able to profile a simple Windows Console Application
5)      “Waiting to start” message is shown in VS2008SP1 Output Window and it times out afterwards with no session file created.’

Resolution:

To resolve:

1)    Close all VS2008 IDE instance(s)
2)      Open Windows explorer with elevated Administrator privilege
3)      Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder.
4)      Open the HOSTS file in a text editor and add an entry
127.0.0.1                      localhost
5)      Save the HOSTS file
6)      Launch a VS2008 instance.  If problem persist, try to reboot the machine and try running VS2008 once more.
