I/O Error When Checking Out Files In VCM Test Perspective

Resolution:

  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: All
  • Product Component: Cross-Platform Client / VCM
  • Platform/OS Version: Windows
    Question:

On VCM test perspective, the below error is encountered while checking out some files.

    -------------------------------------------------------------
I/O Error: The system cannot find the path specified.
    -------------------------------------------------------------

The same file can be checked out successfully on the Cross-Platform Client.

Answer:

This is likely to be related to the Windows limitation of 259 characters in the path length. Please refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/148754 for full details of this limitation.

In the test perspective, the full path length of a file is generally longer.

For example, a file located at C:\test\file1.txt can be successfully checked out from Cross-Platform Client with no problem.

Under VCM test perspective, it could be checked out to a longer path such as C:\Documents and Settings\cchan\Application Data\Borland\StarTeam\vcm\Promote_2007-09-10_03-31-24\preview\test\file1.txt .

As the directory or filename length grows longer, the likelihood of breaching the "259 characters limit" is higher.

Hence, it is advisable to avoid excessive nesting of the directory structure and long filenames in a project.
