When trying to upgrade from StarTeam 2005 build 7.1.070 to StarTeam 2006 you may encounter the error

"You are using a database revision which is incompatible with this server version"

even though you are following the standard upgrade procedure. This is caused by the upgrade process not recognizing the StarTeam 2005 build number as being a valid version because the build number (7.1.070) is higher than the expected build number (7.0.133).

To perform the upgrade successfully, please follow the steps below.

It is advisable to try this solution on a test system first, due to the non-standard nature of the original server version there may be unforeseen issues that may arise. Ensure that you have the correct StarTeam Server installs and patches. You will need,

  • StarTeam Server 2005 (7.0.133) with at least patch #11
  • StarTeam Server 2005 R2 (8.0.172) with at least patch #28
  • StarTeam Server 2006 (9.0.147) with at least patch #4

These steps do not describe in detail the complete steps required to upgrade - you must also ensure that you follow the standard procedure, and include the points below at the appropriate stage.

  1. Install StarTeam 2005 (7.0.133) and attempt the upgrade as per upgrade process, this will fail at this stage with the above message.
  2. As this stage press the "Migrate" button - this will create a new (7.0.133) configuration with all the correct settings and your data, you may also get a similar warning at the end of the migrate process, this can be safely ignored.
  3. Start the new "migrated" configuration, this should start successfully. From this point on you can ignore your original configuration, you may if you wish remove the old configuration & database after you have successfully upgraded to StarTeam 2006 if you wish
  4. Continue the upgrade as per normal process on the newly migrated configuration only. you should now be able to upgrade correctly to StarTeam 2006
