Problem:

Server reports "Permission Denied" when a user with full privilege check in files

Resolution:

  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: 2005 R2, 2006
  • Product Component: Server
  • Platform/OS Version: Windows

Question:

A user with full access rights to a project attempts to check in or add a file. Both StarTeam Client and Server report "Permission Denied" error. This error occurs randomly.

The StarTeam Server log will display an error message that looks like this:

Exception thrown from Unknown: Class = FileSystemException, Code = 0(00000000)
Msg = Permission denied
[OS Error Code] = 13
[FileName] =
D:\StarTeam\DefaultHive\Archives\Temp\0007C74C.1.gz
[Dump Status] = Error dump completed successfully. See file:
D:\StarTeam\Server-FileSystemException-0000-113-2007-09-10-15-25-43.dmp

Answer:

This issue could be related to another process holding on the the archive file in the repository, thus preventing StarTeam from accessing it. Usually, it is the virus scan realtime scanning process.

It is advisable to exclude the StarTeam repository from realtime scanning by the virus scan software to prevent file contention problems with StarTeam.

We have also discovered a problem with CA eTrust Anti Virus 7.1 that has a bug with their Realtime Monitor module. Basically, it is still scanning the folders that are excluded in the Realtime Monitor.

If CA eTrust Anti Virus is running on the StarTeam Server, please refer to the below CA Knowledge Base article to fix the problem.
