Resolution:

Understanding Revision, Content Revision, and Vault Branch Version

Information in this Brief applies to:

  • StarTeam 5.x, StarTeam 4.x
  • Windows NT, 2000

Overview

Revision, Content Revision, and Vault Branch Version are 3 distinct fields, each displaying a slightly different piece of information about the file.

Details

Revision - The number of times a file has been checked in or had its properties changed

Content Revision - The number if times a file has been checked in

Vault Branch Version - The number of times a file has been checked in from the current view

Revision and Content Revision differ in that the Revision field not only reflects the check in operations, it also includes the revisions that were only property changes. Property changes include modifying the description for a file or even changing its name. The Vault Branch Version, like the Content Revision, only reflects the check in operations for the file. It differs in that it only reflects the amount of check ins that occurred in the current view. This is typically more useful when trying to determine how much work has been done in a branched child view for example.
