Problem

During the creation of a server configuration with a Oracle Database connection to a Oracle database server version 12.1.0.2 (12c), an error message "ORA-65096: invalid common user or role name" is encountered. This will prevent the server configuration from being created.

Solution and Explanation

The source of this problem is due to a new feature named Multitenant architecture introduced in Oracle 12c. (I.e. http://docs.oracle.com/database/121/CNCPT/cdblogic.htm) This feature is only available if you have set the Oracle database created as a container database (which is pluggable).

To avoid this problem, you should uncheck the "Create as Container database" checkbox during the database creation process under the Creation Mode screen. By default, this checkbox is turned on.

To move forward with this problem if you have already created the database, you will need to set a prefix for the oracle schema user name with "c##' in order to proceed with the server configuration creation.
