Managing Stories in Backlog

There are two ways to view stories in the backlog, the Ranking view and the Hierarchical view. The ranking view allows you to prioritize stories for inclusion in sprints by dragging them into priority order. The hierarchical view allows you to nest stories under an epic story. In both views, the stories will be displayed in a minimized story card format with basic information required for a backlog. Clicking on the name of the story will open the Story Card.

Epic stories will not appear in the ranking view. Only the actionable stories within an epic will appear in the ranking view. Stories that are part of an epic will have a bracket in the top left corner of the minimized story card. Clicking the bracket will display the name of the epic story. Click it again to close.

In the hierarchical view, epic stories will be collapsed and indicated by an arrow to the left of the minimized story card. Click the arrow to expand the epic and view the children of the epic. Click the arrow again to close.

Once you have stories in the Backlog, it is easy to manage them via the gear symbol on the right side of the story card. From there, you can edit, assign a story to an existing sprint, create a new story just below, or delete the story. If you are in the Hierarchical view, you can also break down a story into smaller stories by clicking Breakdown.

Tagging stories will help with filtering the backlog and sprint planning by helping the team find related stories quickly. Tags can be created on the StarTeam server that can be used by all project teams and project administrators can add tags for their project.
