Problem:

Can I force StarTeam to recognise certain file types as binary files?

Resolution:

  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: 2005R2, 2006
  • Product Component: Client
  • Platform/OS Version: All

Question:

Can I force StarTeam to recognize certain file types as binary files?

Answer:

Yes, this can be done via editing the StarTeam server configuration file. To allow StarTeam to recognize certain files as type binary you need to set the following options:

  1. Browse to C:\Program Files\Borland\StarTeam Server 2005 R2.
  2. Open the file named starteam-server-configs.xml in a text editor
  3. Modify the starteam-server-configs.xml option BinaryFileExt to declare that a certain file extension be treated as a binary file type.

For example:

<option name="BinaryFileExt" value=".prl"/>

To add multiple entries, separate the extensions using a comma.

For example:

Using this example will mean that all files with the .prl file extension will be treated as binary file types. After making the change above you will now need to open the StarTeam client and Add the file with the extension.

StarTeam will now recognize this file as a binary file type.

After modifying the starteam-server-configs.xml you will need to re-start the StarTeam Server and to use this functionality.

The server will have to be patched to at least patch 12 although it is recommended to apply the latest patch for 2005 R2 which is patch 29.

Please note: This feature has been removed from the server versions after StarTeam 2006. The file storage format is now determined by the SDK rather than the server.
