Problem:

How can I tell which port my SQL Server 2005 instance is listening on?

Resolution:

  • Product Name: Any
  • Product Version: Any
  • Product Component: Database
  • Platform/OS Version: Windows

The port on which SQL Server 2005 is listening can be found in the SQL Configuration Manager. If you are running various instances of SQL Server such as the STARTEAM or SSE2005_SE instance then each will have its own listening port therefore using the following you can ascertain which ports are in use.

  1. Click START | PROGRAMS | MICROSOFT SQL SERVER 2005 | CONFIGURATION TOOLS | SQL SERVER CONFIGURATION MANAGER
  2. Expand SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration
  3. Click Protocols for "instance" ("Instance" being the name of the actual instance).
  4. The right pane will update to show server information.
  5. Double click "TCP/IP" protocal name
  6. Click the "IP Addresses" tab. This will show all IP addresses assigned to the server.
  7. Scroll down to find the text "TCP Dynamic Ports" whcih will denote the port on which the instance is listening.
  8. If you want to check port numbers for other instances repeat steps 3 - 7.
