Problem:

Why do I get the error, "org.eclipse.core.runtime.CoreException: Plugin was unable to instantiate class...", when attempting to check-out from StarTeam Eclipse?

Resolution:

  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: 2006
  • Product Component: Eclipse
  • Platform/OS Version: All

This error is caused by having more than one version of StarTeam Eclipse installed and enabled on Eclipse. This can come about after upgrading / installing a later version of the Eclipse plugin.

Eclipse Core runtime Exception

You must disable all versions not being used, leaving only one active and enabled version. You normally will want to disable all earlier versions of the Eclipse plugin.

To disable specific versions of the plugin, do the following;

  1. From StarTeam Eclipse, select HELP | SOFTWARE UPDATES | MANAGE CONFIGURATION
  2. Look for the "StarTeam XXXX Eclipse Client" plugins, and check the version number
  3. Right-click on the version you wish to disable, and select DISABLE
  4. Repeat the process for all other un-required versions
  5. Ensure that you have only one version enabled.
  6. Restart StarTeam Eclipse.the error message should no longer appear
