Answer/Solution:

Normally, it is acceptable to run an additional client version on a PC as long as it is within 2 versions of the server software.

One issue that might come up is licensing issues between versions. For example, if a customer is working with a 5.4 server, usually while upgrading since it is not supported any longer, then the customer would not be able to use any clients past 2005 with that server. This is because starting with 2005, the individual clients were not licensing by themselves, but rely on the server licensing. Here is a listing of what clients will run with what servers:

Server Client
5.2 5.2, 5.4, 6.0
5.4 5.2, 5.4, 6.0
6.0 5.4, 6.0
2005 2005, 2005 R2
2005 R2 2005, 2005 R2, 2006, 2006 R2
2006

2005 R2, 2006, 2006 R2, and 2008

2008

2006, 2006 R2, and 2008

Please note that using a client that is not of the same version as the server is always risky. Borland strongly recommends that all users work with the client that was made for the specific server version that a company is running.
