Problem:

The machine name in the Security log does not match the machine name in the Server log

Resolution:

  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: 2008 R2
  • Product Component: CPC
  • Platform/OS Version: All supported OS

Description:
When comparing the login/logout information in the Security log, the machine name that a user is connecting from is different from the machine name that the Server log says is connecting. In fact, it shows a lot of users connecting from the same machine.

Answer/Solution:

When a company"s new laptops or computers are "ghosted" or staged using an image that has StarTeam already installed, the connectionmanager.ini file is copied that has the original image"s machine name. This machine name in connectionmanager.ini is used by the Security Log to identify the PC that is connecting. This is different from the machine name used in the Server log, which is pulled from the actual machine name in Windows. This could cause some confusion when comparing logs. In order to get around this problem, the connectionmanager.ini file needs to be deleted from "All Users" in Documents and Settings on all of the PCs that are displaying this problem. It will be rebuilt as soon as the StarTeam CPC is restarted, and it will be rebuilt using the correct machine name.

To prevent this problem from re-occurring, the connectionmanager.ini file will need to be deleted from the original image before it is used to re-stage any more computers.
