ERROR: Cannot establish source control

ERROR: Cannot establish source control

Information in this Brief applies to:

  • StarTeam 4.2, 5.x
  • StarTeam Visual InterDev Integration
  • Windows NT, Windows 2000, IIS 4, IIS 5

When attempting to add a web project to source control, the following errormessage is encountered:

Cannot establish source control for the web application. The server does not have a
source control system installed on it, or the user name is not recognized.

There are several possible causes for this message:

  1. The Setup utility (StVSSSetup.exe) has not been executed yet (which "maps" an IIS web site to a StarTeam server, project, view, and folder) for the web site on which this web project resides. Run the Setup utility against the web site containing the web project, and restart IIS.
  2. Either FrontPage Server Extensions has been removed and reconfigured, or the StarTeam Visual InterDev Integration has been uninstalled and reinstalled.
  3. The user name being used to log on to the IIS server does not match a StarTeam user. Both the user name and password must be the same.
  4. Either the web site or web project does not have Basic Authentication enabled. To check/fix this, Open the Internet Services Manager, right-click either the web site or web application, and select "Properties". Select the "Directory Security" tab, click "Edit" (under "Anonymous access and authentication control") and check "Basic authentication".
