Problem:

Can a StarTeam 2006 MSDE database be migrated to SQL Server Express for use with StarTeam 2008?

Resolution:

  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: 2006
  • Product Component: Database
  • Platform/OS Version: Windows

While MSDE does not have a graphical management tool, it can be managed using the SQLServer Management Studio, with a few settings changes. The management studio can then be used to migrate the database. The database should be backed up prior to attempting the following:

  1. Install SQL Server Management Studio express available free from the Microsoft Download Center
  2. Run "C:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\svrnetcn.exe"
  3. Select "TCP/IP" and move to enabled protocol
  4. Open a command promt
  5. Run "C:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\osql -E"
  6. Enter into the prompt window the following commands:

    use master
    EXEC sp_addlogin "adminuser","adminpassword"
    EXEC sp_addsrvrolemember "usernameyouwanttobeadmin", "sysadmin"
    go

This will create a user with the name "adminuser" and with "adminpassword" that you can use to register your MSDE server into SQL Enterprise Manager.
  7. Right click the entry for the MSDE database
  8. Click TASKS | DETACH and detach the database
  9. Right click the SSE instance
  10. Click TASKS | ATTACH and attach the database
