Problem:

What is the maximum size of a project in StarTeam?

Resolution:

  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: 2005, 2005 Rel2, 2006
  • Product Component: Server/Client, Projects
  • Platform/OS Version: Windows, Linux, Solaris - All

Description:
What is the largest that a project can be, or should be? Are there any maximum size limits that need to be adhered to in order to have the server perform at its optimum level?

Answer/Solution:
Generally, StarTeam can handle projects that are extremely large. The only physical limitations on the project size are based on what the hardware can handle. There are no specific size limitations for individual projects.

The real limitations concern the number of users you have. If you have a large project, and then have a few hundred users accessing it all at once, then you will notice a definite performance hit. Something like 90 users (which is still a lot) most likely won"t see any problems. You"ll hardly ever have all 90 on at the same time, in the same project, anyways.

As for the project structure, as long as you don"t nest things too deeply, like views within views within views, going 5 or 6 deep, then you should be able to manage it easily.

So, there"s really no "set in stone" hardline limits on project size. Borland suggests setting up the views so that you don"t have to create a lot of views that are nested in child views. The more views that you can keep right off the root, the better. If you have to go to grandchild level, that"s okay, but any further is pushing the limits of manageability.

Please don"t confuse this with the folder structure. You can go to as many levels as necessary with your folders, as some development projects require folder structures that are very very deep.
