How do I resolve issues that arise due to using an unsupported database collation?

Resolution:

  • Product: StarTeam
  • Version: 2006 and above
  • Components: Database
  • Platform: Non-English Windows OS

Using the incorrect collation on a Japanese operating system will throw the following error:

This issue is due to the newer version of Microsoft SQL 2005 running on an non-English operating system using the machines locale as default collation setting, in this case Japanese_CI_AS.

You will not ba able to create new configuration automatically as the database has no tables created. As a workaround you need to create the database and DSN manually before the server configuration is created.

You may follow the steps below to resolve the error:

  1. Navigate to Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express.
  2. Login using "sa" account.
  3. Create a new database on SQL server.
  4. Create a new user/password for the database
  5. Highlight the database created in Step 3 from the Object Explorer panel.
  6. Right-click to select "Properties".
  7. Select "Options" page then change the StarTeam database collation to Latin1_General_CI_AS.

  8. On the StarTeam Server machine navigate to Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Data Sources (ODBC)
  9. Click on System DSN tab to add the ODBC connection to the database created in Step 3 using the credentials from Step 4. Obtain the details from your DBA if you are not sure.
  10. Follow the "Create New Data Source" wizard to create the DSN
  11. Please make sure that the following option is correctly set then click Finish:

Please create a new configuration now in StarTeam and point it to this DSN.
