Problem:

Unable to connect to StarTeam server with Web Edition - Heap space exception

Resolution:

Question:
Why does the Starteam Web Edition give the "Unable to connect to StarTeam server." error. Restarting the IIS fixes the problem temporarily and the problem reoccurs after some time.


Answer:

The JVM throws this error when it runs out of memory. First open the XMLGateway.ini, which is by default found at (C:\Program Files\Borland\StarTeam Web Edition). Second, uncomment out the bottom line which contains the string "Options=". Third, edit this line so that is says this: Options=-Xmx512m.

At the end, your file should look something similar to this (for 2006 Web Edition; XMLGateway290.ini):

# Default Java VM settings for SDK COM applications.
#
# A given COM application can override the default settings
# by providing a StarteamApp.ini in the application install folder.
[Java VM]

# The name of the Java VM to be used.
# Must be the name of a certified Java VM (listed in Java.ini).
Name=Sun1.5.0_09

# Librarypath=
Options=-Xmx512m

Save this file and restart the Web Edition IIS service. If the problem comes back quickly, increase the heap size until the problem subsides.
