Problem:

When starting the StarTeam server as a service why do I get the following error message "Msg = Failed to acquire a database connection. Please contact an administrator to increase number of database connections "

Resolution:


  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: All
  • Product Component: Server
  • Platform/OS Version: N/A

The reason for this error is that the StarTeam server service is not able to make a connection to the StarTeam database.

Consulting the log file and you will see the following log entry:

Exception thrown from Unknown: Class = StDatabaseException, Code = 33(0x00000021) Msg = Failed to acquire a database connection. Please contact an administrator to increase number of database connections

The cause of this failure is that the StarTeam server service is trying to connect to the back-end database via a User DSN which is not able to connect. To fix this you need to create a System DSN to connect to the back-end database and re-configure the StarTeam configuration properties. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Create a System DSN go to START | CONTROL PANEL | ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS | DATA SOURCES (ODBC) | SYSTEM DSN
  2. Open the StarTeam server Administration console
  3. Select the configuration and go to SERVER CONFIGURATION PROPERTIES | DATABASE CONNECTION INFORMATION
  4. Insert the System DSN name into the ODBC Database name field, insert user name and password and verify connection.
  5. Re-start the StarTeam server configuration

The StarTeam server should now start as a windows service.
