Problem:

One cannot start the StarTeam service that accesses a Repository through a UNC Path

Resolution:

  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: 2005 R2
  • Product Component: Server
  • Platform/OS Version: Windows

Question:

Why can I not start the StarTeam service that accesses a Repository through a UNC Path?

Answer:

A Windows service typically uses the Local System Account. However this account does not have any network access/privileges. One needs to log the StarTeam service on as a specific account on the Local Computer that also has network access or instead just create a new user account, grant the appropriate privileges to that user, and use that user in the "Log on as:" service option.

Follow these steps:
1) Go to Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services console.
2) Open your StarTeam service that is accessing the Repository through a UNC Path.
3) Click on the Log on Tab.
4) Disable/uncheck the radio button that says Local system account.
5) Check the radio button that says and choose the appropriate user account.
6) Start your StarTeam service.
7) Check your Server log to verify that the StarTeam server correctly started.
