Problem:

Why do I get the error "O/S-Error: (OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified" when creating a new server configuration?

Resolution:

  • Product Name: StarTeam
  • Product Version: 2008 R2
  • Product Component: Server
  • Platform/OS Version: Windows 2003 R2

During server configuration creation, you will need to create a Tablespace for StarTeam Schema. If your backend database is Oracle, a dialog titled "Create Oracle Data Source" is displayed for you to specify the location of the database data files as well as their sizes. On clicking "Finish", you may run into an error dialog window that reports the following errors:

ORA-01119: error in creating database file

ORA-27040: file create error, unable to create file

OSD-04002: unable to open file

O/S-Error: (OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified.

ORA-06512: at "SYSTEM. CREATE_DATABASE", line 1

Example of this error dialog is shown in the following image:

Among all the error codes, the root cause of this error is indicated by the error message:

O/S-Error: (OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified.

This error message indicates that the server configuration creation program is unable to find the folder specified to contain the datafiles. To resolve the error, create the folder in the specified drive (eg: e:\est3_datafile) and then continue with the creation of server configuration.

If you are using SQL Server database, you may see a different error as shown below. But the same suggestion (creating a folder in the specified drive) holds good for this error as well.
