Sending messages between threads to stop processing

This article provides sample COBOL programs that demonstrate how threads interact with other threads by sending messages to stop processing.

Problem:

Heavy processing inside of an application can slow it down significantly, for example when a grid is populated by a large number of records or when many copying files.

Resolution:

Use the statements SEND MESSAGE, RECEIVE MESSAGE FROM THREAD, and WAIT FOR THREAD to stop processing if necessary.

The attached two COBOL programs show how to use these statements in order to provide the end user the opportunity to terminate processing.
