Hi,
We currently have Microfocus Visual Cobol version 6.0. Can it be upgraded directly to version 9.0 or it has to go from 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, then 9.0?
Kind regards,
Sar

Hello Sar Palado,
Welcome to the OpenText Community site, and thanks for posting.
You can upgrade directly to Visual COBOL 9.0, no need to install the other versions. By the way, OpenText always recommends that you install the latest Patch Update available for the product version you are installing. For Visual COBOL 9.0, this is currently Patch Update 5.
I don’t think you mentioned your platform, but please note that on Windows, we recommend that you uninstall the prior product version before you install the newer version. Also on Windows, you will need to install the base version (for example, Visual COBOL 9.0) and then separately install a Patch Update for that version (i.e. the Patch Update 5 referenced above.) On Unix/Linux platforms, Patch Updates are complete product installations, so you don't need to install a base version first.
Hope this helps,
Blair
Hi Blair, thanks a lot for your reply which really helps. Our platform is Linux.
Hi Sar Palado,
Thank you for the kind feedback!
Since you are planning an upgrade on Linux, you might want to review this page in the Visual COBOL Development Hub 9.0 documentation, which describes installation instructions for upgrade. The described install process should do a backup of your current product installation (COBDIR) directory, but to be be extra cautious, you might create your own backup of the install directory (by default this is /opt/microfocus/Visual COBOL) before you run the new installer.
Hope this helps,
Blair
Hi Blair,
Thank you once again for your advice, I'm sure I'll be asking for more in the coming days/weeks.
