Securing Your Enterprise Messaging System

How to Protect your Enterprise Messaging System

Your email system is critical to your organization, it is used to communicate internally and with customers, partners and other stakeholders. Email is a vulnerable system. Phishing, viruses, spam, DDoS attacks, and other cyber-attacks can take your system down, or cost your organization money. You need to protect your Enterprise Messaging system.

Micro Focus Enterprise Messaging Security includes unparalleled protection for your messaging system and network. This includes functionality for inbound and outbound protection, antivirus, anti-spam, cybercrime protection, DDoS protection, and porn blocking with built-in image analysis. Enterprise Messaging uses the latest technology to keep your messaging system protected, including protection for the messaging transfer agent (MTA), post office agent (POA), WebAccess, and Mobility.

This solution does more than block viruses and spam. Now, your users can quickly mark suspicious messages as junk mail, preventing them from reaching your system in the future. Marked email will automatically be routed to the junk mail folder. You can also quarantine suspicious messages, with the Quarantine Manager.

Micro Focus offers Enterprise Messaging Security as part of its Enterprise Messaging product. Micro Focus Enterprise Messaging is a complete collaboration solution that provides your organization with email, scheduling, instant messaging, chat-based teamwork, security, archiving, backup, and disaster recovery. Enterprise Messaging enables your employees to collaborate anytime, anywhere, on any device while maintaining security and meeting compliance.

Threats are Evolving

Every day, threats to your organization’s email system continue to evolve and become more sophisticated. These threats range from traditional spam and viruses (which are still very much a threat), to ransomware, malware, phishing, email spoofing, DDoS attacks, and even state-sponsored attacks. These threats can cost your company in lost time, and as we have seen with recent attacks, such as the phishing attack on Chipotle, the Seagate Technology W2 breach, and the Snapchat Data Leak, these threats can also cost your company's reputation.

Cybercrime Costs You Time and Money

Mike Danseglio, a security project manager with Microsoft, said, “Attackers want to pay the rent. They don't want to write a worm that destroys your hardware. They want to assimilate your computers and use them to make money”.

Cybersecurity Ventures, a leading researcher in global cybersecurity, predicts that cybercrime damages will cost the world $6 trillion annually, up from $3 trillion in 2015. RSA released an infographic “2017 Global Fraud & Cybercrime Forecast”, which  shows that 1 in 20 malware attacks is ransomware and the average ransom cost is $300 per victim. Additionally, a new phishing attack is launched every 30 seconds and the annual cost of phishing to global organizations is $9.1 billion!

Attacks are aimed directly at your organization and Enterprise Messaging helps ensure you are protected.

Your Users are Worried about Cybercrime

According to the October 2017 Gallup Poll, cybercrime is the top crime worry for Americans with 67% of Americans worry about hackers stealing their personal information and 66% worry about identity theft. Compare that to 38% who worry about their car being stolen or broken into and 30% who worry about being a victim of terrorism. This graphic, from Forbes and Statista shows the full results.

Cybercrime is more common than ever. According to Gallup “One in four Americans report that they or a member of their household has had personal information stolen by hackers in the last 12 months.” Think about that. Twenty-five percent have been victims of cybercrime. Compare that to a couple of other crime stats from Gallup, “Sixteen percent of U.S. adults report that they or a member of their household has been a victim of identity theft during that same time period. Having money or property stolen was the most common conventional crime to affect U.S. adults, with 12% saying they had been a victim of this activity in the last 12 months.”

Enterprise Messaging
  • Thanks for your comment! The security piece of Enterprise Messaging is Secure Messaging Gateway (formerly known as GWAVA). You can implement this as a separate solution for GroupWise. It is the best solution to secure GroupWise as it protects the GroupWise Mobility Service, WebAccess, the MTA, and the POA. You can learn more about it here

One thing to consider, if you have GroupWise and one other product like Retain, it is going to be more cost effective to implement Enterprise Messaging. With EM, you will get GroupWise, TeamWorks, Retain, Secure Messaging Gateway, GroupWise Disaster Recovery, GroupWise Monitoring and Reporting, and GroupWise Mailbox Management.
  • Looks to me as a good, complete product. But what if you have already Groupwise 2014 and Retain for Archiving. Are there 'parts' from the Secure Messaging System wich can be used for Groupwise. By example, the SPF function, or DKIM and DDos protection? Or is this software not interchangeable with the products i mentioned. HKO
