SMTP acknowledgement time

Hello All,

Customer has application, which is used to send documents per email.
In application the groupwise server with port 25 is set.

Now when sending documents, the application goes slow, while it send the mail to the groupwise system.
Testing with the application shows more then 6 seconds.
Application programmer blaims groupwise, because it takes 6 seconds for the groupwise system to acknowledge the sending of the mail.

What setting(s) can I use to speed up this process ?

None. *if* that calim is true, there's a problem somewhere, not a
    setting that's in the way.

For starters, we can probably tell something by having a look at the
*verbose* GWIA log of such an incoming mesaage.

None, it has always been milliseconds when I've looked close to it
(unless message was big for the links involved).
A complimentary approach to the verbose logging would be to take a
packet capture of conversation, possible from both ends and compared.
