Monitor reports PO is unknown every 10 minutes

I've upgraded to GW14.0.2 and since the upgrade GWMonitor reports one PO status as unknown every 10 minutes, 5 minutes later it reports ok.

The Admin console doesn't show any state change at all and users are connected fine, so it just seems to be the monitor.

I can access the PO via it's web console without any problems.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on troubleshooting this.

Thanks
Steve

  • Hi Steve,

Is the POA in question on the same server as monitor, or on the same network segment, or remote?

    Please let us know.

    Same network segment, different server.

  • Hi Steve,

I was hoping that you would say "remote" and that would point to a network issue ;)

With the Post Office going into an Unknown state it means that the agent is not responding to Poll requests. I'm not too sure why Polling would lose communications on a local network segment. Have you done any customizations to the Poll interval or anything like that?

    Cheers,
  • Hi Laura,

Nope, this is an out-of-the-box install of the monitor. Nothing has been customised.

I've turned GWMonitor off for now to stop it nagging me!

    Any other ideas?

Either something is getting in the way of the packets (whether on wire
or in one of the servers) or one of the agents is having issues.

    - Start with a continuous ping between those servers for a stretch. Are
any dropped? Does the response time vary much? Try with larger packet
sizes such as 500 or 1000 bytes.
    - A packet capture on the POA side would help to see if it is receiving
the Poll packets and see if responses are being made that just don't
get to the Monitor box in a timely fashion.
    - A test with the firewalls down on both servers would be useful.
    - When you next have a suitable maintenance window, shutting down your
network switches to fully flush their MAC-Port cache.
    - Confirm that you don't have any duplicate IP addresses or MACs
    - Are any of the NICs in question showing errors? Do they increment
with the fails? "ifconfig" on SLES, I think "Performance Monitor"
(perfmon.exe) is the tool on Windows.

    - Does the POA logs show any errors? Either server's system logs?

  • Hi Steve,

Somewhere along the line packets are being dropped :( The trick is to figure out where.

Below, in the thread, Andy has posted some good troubleshooting tips. I would suggest that you start there, the continious ping is a good place to start :)

Please let us know how it goes.

    Cheers,

  • Make sure the POA in question has the same HTTP credentials as the other agents.
