Mailbox size in general - is there an optimal size?

I haven't considered this question since the days of "disk is sort of
expensive, so it needs to be rationed."

Is there any good reason to put any limit on mailbox size these days?
At some point, does indexing become an issue? Is there a way to
determine a suitable upper limit?

I've not really come across any real world resoning to limit mailbox
sizes per se in groupwise. If anything, then just to limit the total PO
size, that is of more concern than the individual mailbox sizes.

I've seen groupwise scale apparently easily(e.g without noticeable
issues) to 2TB big post offices, and 100GB individual mailboxes. Most
installations are lightyears away from such sizes.

One more general concern with growing data, as usual, is backup.

  • Swerver storage is still very expensive, so I've set a limit of 10 GB per user.

gave some tips in another thread:

As there are a few places to control message sizes, I wrote them all up

The other step I've done that tends to help the users understand the sizes of things and be
less likely to send them on email is to have the worst offenders setup a search folder for all
messages over 10MB, sort by size and too look at biggest ones occasionally (such as when you
prod them that they have bloated again)
As for finding who has those big messages, written up at
