Advice on merging 2 groupwise systems

I've searched the forums but since each situation is slightly different, so I figured I would start a new post.

I support two different school districts, each with their own eDirectory tree and Groupwise server(single GW server, single domain/PO/GWIA/WebAcc). For economic reasons, these two school districts are merging at the end of this year, and will become a single school district. My goal is to merge the two Groupwise systems so that in the end, District A and District B both exist in then same Groupwise system, with a single domain/PO and all mail, contacts, calendar items from their old systems exist in the merged system. They will most likely have a new domain name for the new(merged) district.

Existing domains:
mail@school1csd.org
mail@school2csd.org

New domain:
mail@school3csd.org

What would be the best way to accomplish this goal?

Is it possible to maintain the existing e-mail addresses in addition to the newly created "mail@school3csd.org"?

Any further information needed?

I believe that is all straightforward, yes. OTOH, I've never done it, so
Danita, etc might have more advice.

Lazy answer: Set up a simple test system and TRY! You should do that ANYWAY!
  • As Michael indicates it's fairly straightforward. Really you have four different issues though:

    1. Merge the trees. This is the most complicated issue, and one that you should consult the eDirectory forums for. It's beyond the scope of the GW discussion.
    2. Graft the GroupWise system from the merged tree into the final tree. A simple "walk through the wizard" routine for most cases.
    3. Merge the GW systems. Since they are both single domain systems this is not complicated. Choose which system is to be the resultant primary and merge the other domain into in as secondary. The docs are good on this, but if you have trouble, come back!
    4. Make sure that all three Internet domain are listed in Internet Addressing, and set the new domain as default for outbound mail. As long as there are no duplicate email user names in these Internet domains it will be automatic that users can receive mail for their old and new addresses. If there is a danita@school1csd.org and danita@school2csd.org then there will be some difficulty to sort out.

    Hope this helps.
  • Thank you both for the info! Luckily for me, I'm just the gw admin, my co-worker gets to handle the tree merge, which he has done many times before so I should be good there.

I figured it would be straight-forward and have looked over the documentation, so I feel comfortable moving forward.

    Thanks again!
  • rpf2, I don't suppose you can share some more info at all could you? I need to do the exact same thing, and haven't done a tree merge in the last 9 years!

    Cheers, Alan

  • Unfortunately I've never done a tree merge, I'm solely a Groupwise administrator and I have a co-worker who handles all e-Directory stuff. So in that regard, you probably know more than I do! As far as the Groupwise merge, I won't be doing it until this Summer. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
  • Hi Alan,

I suggest that you head over to the eDirectory forums and get info from there on how to do a successful tree merge.

    Cheers,

at a high level it isn't hard
    A) make sure both trees are healthy
    B) make sure both trees are running at the same version
    C) make sure the servers (w/ replicas) from each tree can see each
    other.
    D) make sure both trees have the same schema (import each way twice)
    F) then merge one into the other.
The basic process hasn't change much in years, so while Googling for
'edirectory tree merge' will give you some older hits, but they will
help you understand the process. Then head over to the eDirectory
forums to get answers for the questions you'll now have. Another
option for such an operation you aren't likely to repeat, would be to
get a consultant who does such things a little more regularly to do the
    work.
