misspelled@ourdomain.com trying to be sent out GWIA

I had some odd behavior with GroupWise attempting to deliver email to the internet for when a message was addressed as misspelled@ourdomain.com. Normally, I would expect the client to stop and ask the user to resolve the unknown address.

The situation escalated when a message with 400 some recipients was sent. The user copy-pasted the list of recipients, all of whom were addressed as userid@ourdomain.com. The first 20 some recipients received the message. Then there were six some bad addresses with misspelled userids, or non-existent@ourdomain.com. These and the remaining several hundred correctly named users that should have stayed internal were then sent to the GWIA for delivery.

What could casue this to happen, or what settings should I check? We recently enabled flat forwarding, but our system has been pretty unchanged.

    That's working as designed. You are supposed to be able to send email to
    your own domain, but not inside groupwise.

    Nope. That would make it entirely impossible to have multiple email
    systems under the same domain name, something big companies have regularly.

    That shouldn't have happened. All correctly named users should have been
    delivered internally, the others go to GWIA and in doubt produce an
    error there.

    There's nothing to check or configure.

    With regards to the correct mail addresses not being delivered... you mentioned that the user in question copied/pasted the e-mail adddresses. Is it possible that there was a delimiter e.g. ";" missing after one of the addresses?

    You can also check this registry key to ensure that both a comma and a semi-colon are accepted delimiter charaters:

    HKCU\Software\Novell\GroupWise\Address Book - User Interface

    Then the Delimiter Characters key, the default values are ',;'

    I have seen this registry key missing for unknown reasons and causing issues with mail delivery to multiple recipients.
