SSH into appliance to install SSL cert

using version 7 rev 598
I cannot login to the appliance at the console or ssh. I have the
password used when the appliance was installed, but it will not take
that password for the root user. I need to ssh into the appliance to
install our SSL files - is there a way in the admin interface to change
the password for ssh?

    There is no root user. The user to use is gwava (pretty normal for
    ubuntu based machines, root is usually disabled).
