The Disappearing GroupWise Trick - and How to Avoid It

Problem

The GroupWise Client 6.5.x on Windows 2003/Terminal Services shows its splash screen, then it disappears. Either the splash screen will appear, and an error message will appear in the Application log, or there will be no Application log error.

Solution

Make sure Data Execution Prevention (System->Advanced Tab->Performance/Settings button->Data Execution Prevention) is set to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only". I tried the second (exception) option to no avail. Save yourself some misery!

Environment

  • Windows Server 2003/2003 R2
  • NetWare Client 4.91 SP2/SP3
  • GroupWise Client 6.5.2/.3/.4/.5/.6/.6 R1

  • What the bleep are you disabling DEP for? Just because a lousy programmed Novell vehicle doesn’t use memory allocation properly?

Scandalous that in their TID they don't admit to be lousy programmers but instead advise to partly disable DEP !

Instead add these exceptions (still necessary with version 7.04):
