transfer id migration iprint question

We are preparing to migrate nw65sp8 to oes. reading the docs I think I ma
getting conflicting instructions. One reads to not have any services on the
target oes box and to shut down all services from the host for the
migration. And yet other documentation (troubleshooting iprint migrations)
it states to have the iprint broker and manager created and in a different
context than the source?? I was presuming that doing a transfer id /
migration I would not need to create anything for the target server. Is this
the case for the iprint migration?

  • Hello,

for this please read the docs Migration Tool Administration Guide
(mig_tools_lx.pdf) chap. 27 (and of course iPrint_lx.pdf). As far as i
remember our iPrint-migration from NetWare 6.5 to OES11 the OES11 target
server was set up with iPrint driverstore- and manager-objects set up in
a seperate ou where also the printer objects will be found after the
migration. Advantage of this setup is you can do the migration again if
anything goes wrong, you can leave you iPrint config of the NetWare
server as it is in case of a fall back to NetWare(we had to do so). You
are also able to test the new iPrint server before you do the migration,
you can create a printer install the printer on a workstation and see if
you new iprint server does its job.

No, iPrint migration is a bit different.

My signature has my guides from OES2 (yeah, I know, but I just finished my OES2 to OES11 docs, just gotta scrub them).

    But the principals still apply.

IF your NW environment is NOT setup for iPrint using DNS, I suggest strongly that you do that first.
Then you still install/configure iPrint on the TARGET server.

Basically you'll have 2 iPrint environments running simultaneously which means you can actually TEST the target server first to make sure it's working.
Then you do the ID transfer and afterwards, adjust the DNS entries and you should be good. That should also mean that you dont have to run around and mess with the workstations either since the DNS entries are just being redirected.
  • thanks for the reply. we actually ran through the scenario twice using a VM
netware and VM OES box. Doing that cleared up some confusion. And it worked
    as described in the docs.

  • when you refer to "DNS Entries" are you referring to the DNS record for the
    manager?

Yes, and possibly the broker, but mostly the manager. Your client pc's (you can look at any iPrint printer that's installed) should hopefully be resolving the iPrint server via DNS instead of IP. In NetWare I believe this required loading the module with a /DNS or something switch (it's been a while since we were on NetWare).

  • phew. I thought you were going to tell me that all 900 printers were going
to need DNS records. our current Netware is all IP with the printers, broker
and manager. The new setup will have a record for the manager. Thanks for
    the clarification.

    NP.

We had originally setup our NetWare using the /IP setup for iPrint instead of the /DNS switch (I can't remember the EXACT switch for the old NLM's, but one was for IP and one for DNS).

So we actually ended up switching to DNS on NetWare FIRST (which of course, forced all the users to reinstall their printers).

Then we did the migration with the ID transfer (technically ID transfer is NOT required just for this scenario. We chose ID transfer for a variety of OTHER reasons).
