Short term memory allocator is out of memory... 55 attempts failed..request size 16384 - PORTAL.NLM

Hi, I have seen many posts of short term memory allocator issues but I am not sure ho to proceed with this one as we use the portal for managing and downloading files on machines that can't run the client. (long story.)

Short term memory allocator is out of memory.
55 attempts to get more memory failed.
request size in bytes is 16384 from Module portal.nlm

This is NW 6.5 SP8. I have restarted the server to clear the errors but we have never had memory issues on any netware server..and only run the basic installed nlms out of the box. (cardinal rule!)

Thanks for any suggestions!

  • Well, i'd rather doubt that portal.nlm was ever meant to be used as a client replacement, so i can't state for sure how it behaves when it's hammered that way. But for the basics: what's the output of

    set auto tune server memory

    and

    set file cache maximum size

  • Thank you. I will make the changes.  Note, it works suprisingly well as a thin client and it is only one computer.  Interesting enough..the portal.nlm runs out of memory when nobody is connected through it..

Again, Thank you for all your time and efforts over the years. I greatly appreciate it!

  • Nothing to change yet. We currently need just the output of the two commands.

  • Sir, please clarify. Did I miss a step in this thread?

  • Yes.

    what's the output of

    set auto tune server memory

    and

    set file cache maximum size

  • Sorry..you did ask me to get output...

    set file cache maximum size
    File Cache Maximum Size: 1073741824
    Limits: 1073741824 to 3229614080
Can be set in the startup ncf file.
Description: This parameter controls the maximum size of the file system
cache. A smaller file system cache results in less memory
fragmentation but is less optimized for file services. This
parameter takes effect immediately but works best if the server
is restarted. This parameter will supersede the File Service
Memory Optimization parameter if both are set.

    set auto tune server memory
    Auto Tune Server Memory: OFF
Can be set in the startup ncf file.
Description: Server will self tune internal memory set parameters.

  • OK. Then

    set auto tune server memory=off
    set file cache maximum size=2147483648

make sure that these parameters are NOT set anywhere in startup.ncf (or autoexec.ncf or elsewhere...) and reboot the server. That should avoid the issue. Or at least extend the time until it happens.

  • Thanks, Done. should I add them to startup.ncf or autoexec.ncf or are the persistent?

  • These settings usually "survive" in the registry. Nevertheless it'll never harm to "fix" them in startup.ncf, that's where they belong.

  • Dear Mathias,

Unfortunately we are still getting short term memory allocator errors for the PORTAL.NLM program. It is only occasionally connected to by one workstation. And the server seems slow to respond to requests..

At the bottom of the SYS$LOG..ERR file we have these entries..
