OES11 time always out of sync

One of the OES11 server on my tree is always out of sync. No matter how many times I issue "rcntp ntptimeset", the server time gets out of sync within 30 seconds. Any clue?
  • forgot to mention, the server is actually a sles11sp2 OES11sp1 on XenServer 6.2

... btw, why can't I edit my first post???
  • Is this server pointed to the same server as others? How far out of sync
is it, and how are you determining that it is out of sync? What value is
in your ntp.drift file (which I think is under /var/lib/ntp/drift by default)?

Posts can only be edited for a couple of minutes via the HTTP interface.

Are any of the other servers also virtualised? Under XenServer? The same
    XenServer?

Hmm I thought posts can be edited any time via the HTTP interface but
there is a limited window as to whether the edit will then show up via
NNTP (up to 10 minutes depending on when the next HTTP to NNTP
    synchronisation happens).

    HTH.

  • All other oes servers are virtualized, running on XenServer 6.2. They are pointing to the same time source within the network. ndsrepair -T shows that the server with the problem are always out of sync by 3~ 5.

The value in /var/lib/ntp/drift/ntp.drift is 128.057

Have you set the independent_wallclock? With SLES 11 SP2 and later this is typically needed when running as paravirtual guest.

Try inputting this into the servers console (as root):

    echo 1 > /proc/sys/xen/independent_wallclock

Then re-sync the servers time and see if that now stays in sync.

If that helps, add "xen.independent_wallclock = 1" to /etc/sysctl.conf so the setting will "stick" after a server reboot.

    Cheers,
    Willem
  • Thanks, Will! It seems to work... it's been over 20 minutes and the server is still in sync!
  • Thanks here too, I had the same problem. No matter what I did, I had one vm OES11 box that was 7 -8 minutes fast. The independent wallclock setting did the trick. The odd thing is, the physical host itself is fine and was always on time.
