novell vmware image then rename

I will soon like in a month or so have to setup something like 15 netware 6.0 servers in vmware.

I've did the same task about 6 months and it was painful as I was setting up multiple netware servers at a time due to a limited timeframe.

I had an idea that I could setup a netware server inside a VM as a template, then just change to the appropriate host name and ip address.

I'm trying to test this concept based on this article.

http://support.novell.com/docs/Tids/Solutions/10080951.html

I'm having problems with this step.

5. In ConsoleOne go into Device Manger, or the Media tab on for the server. Select NSS POOLS and click the Update NDS tab. Select the NSS Volumes and click the Update NDS tab. Run a DSREPAIR "Check volume objects and trustees" to verify this process is complete. If the Media Tab cannot be seen, check the General Tab, in Console One on the properties of the server, and ensure that the "Other Name" field is blank. This will allow the media tab to be seen.
For NetWare 6.5 load NSSMU at the server console, or use iManager for this. In ConsoleOne the Media tab for the server object does not work with NetWare 6.5. In NSSMU select Pools | <Pool Name> | ALT F8 to Update eDirectory.

I went to the general tab in consoleone, trying to delete the Other Name field, clicked Apply but it doesn't save.
Would this field be saved in a config file anywhere or what could I be doing wrong.

I've tried on consoleone on novell netware itself and running of windows.

If I can get this working, it would save we hours of work and would reduce mistakes made.

Why NetWare 6? Have you looked at doing an unattended install:

  • Thanks for the reply.

I would like to use Netware 6.5, but my boss wants to stick with netware 6 to keep our environment consistent.

We're actually only using our netware servers to host some legacy foxpro software that runs in DOS.

Anyhow I've had some success with getting netware 6 doing an unattended install using the response.ni file.

There's just one problem, I can live with it if there's no solution, but would put the icing on the cake if i can get this sorted.

So I've injected the lsi raid drivers and e1000 lan drivers into the fat16 partition.

I've added these entries under the [NWI:Hardware] Section.

    Update Network Driver Directory =C:\IMAGE\DRIVERS
    Update Storage Driver Directory =C:\IMAGE\DRIVERS

Is that is all required, as I have prompt set to false, but it still asks for the drivers for storage and network.

I see there is an entry for Update Source Drive Type = <string>.
But as the drivers are located on the dos parition not sure if that will work, I tried other but it didn't auto install the drivers.

Another idea is if I can extract the netware6 iso and copy the drivers onto the cd and repack the iso.

Thanks for your suggestion about unattended install. I never knew that existed with novell. sounds similar to the linux kickstark file.

  • I've managed to get the network drivers and raid drivers hopefully auto install.
I extracted the iso, copied drivers to the storage and lan directories. Extracted boot image from iso and reburned iso file.
    That part is fixed now.
I'm just trying to work out why near the end of the install it keeps saying it had an error reading the license file.
It's reading the cryptology file no problems.

I'm guessing an incorrect dos path.
