4 Must Do Activities at Global AppSec – San Francisco

by Micro Focus Employee in CyberRes

It's less than a week away from one of the best Application Security conferences of the year, Global AppSec by the OWASP Foundation, which will take place at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco on November 14-18. With five days of activities taking place this year, it’s easy to get overwhelmed on where to spend your time. To make things easier for you, here is a list of four activities you need to have as part of your schedule to be sure you get the most out of your conference.

Global AppSec#1 – Network

If there are networking events, join them. If there are groups of people sitting around talking, join them. Connect with people. These are your peers. People in the same industry as you, facing the same problems as you. I have never met a single person at a conference that wasn’t happy to exchange information with me and there are quite a few people in which I regularly keep up. Plus, it’s always fun showing up at a conference knowing who might be there and making plans with them. Great things come from networking. Here are some hashtags related to Global AppSec that you can follow in Social Media: #OWASP #GLOBALAPPSECSANFRAN #APPSECSANFRAN. And of course follow the CyberRes handle on Twitter!

#2 – Visit the Expo Hall

Many people feel like expo halls are just for companies trying to sell you stuff. While this can be true in some cases, it’s also an amazing time to speak to some of the experts behind the leading software you either use or are looking to use. Ask questions, ask for demos, share your problems. These are fantastic opportunities for you to have the full attention of some really smart people. But, if you are only going to visit one booth during the entire show, make sure it’s the Fortify Booth at G04!

Fortify offers end-to-end application security solutions with the flexibility of testing on-premises and on-demand to cover the entire software development lifecycle.

#3 – Join the “Web Application Security Essentials” Training

This course is aligned with the OWASP 10 and is the perfect start (yet also in-depth) to your AppSec journey. You can find the course schedule here.

This course provides the knowledge and resources required to evaluate the security of web applications. The participants, through the understanding of theory and a strong focus on practical exercises, will be able to identify critical vulnerabilities in web applications, understand how exploitation works and learn how to implement the necessary corrective measures.

If you are looking for more information, you can see all available trainings here.

#4 – The Keynotes

This year's lineup promises to be both informative and entertaining.

From Netflix security risks and OWASP cheat sheets, to Dr. Miller’s stories hacking iPhone, Android and Fiat Chrysler vehicles (which resulted in a recall of 1.4million vehicles) there’s something for everyone in this year's keynotes at Global AppSec – San Francisco

Stop by and talk to our experts, too!

There you have it! Four very simple things you can do while attending the Global AppSec conference this year to get the most out of the event.

So if you are coming to San Francisco for the conference portion on Nov 14-18, be sure to visit Micro Focus Booth G04 and talk to our experts and learn about Fortify, our end to end application security solution that can help you start testing your apps in a single day.

OH! And back by popular demand, customized Graffiti water bottles! (Reason #2A - can’t forget about the SWAG!).
