Getting Clarity into your IT: What’s New with Operations Center 5.7?

It’s amazing how little clarity and visibility we have into the true state of any IT environment, despite getting more and more monitoring tools looking at them.  Sometimes, a common cause for this is actually too many monitoring tools.  Each one may be great for its specialized task, but they fail to communicate with each other.  You need ways to both expand your monitoring capabilities, reduce the number of monitoring tools you have—and integrate your monitoring data into easy and intuitive ways to see the entire state of your IT environment.

Of course—the first part of expanding monitoring while reducing the number of tools is sometimes more elusive than it seems unless you have a flexible tool like AppManager that can handle everything from infrastructure, virtualization, application, database, network, unified communications, VoIP, and SAN monitoring across multiple platforms.  However, the second part of the equation is more than a “manager of managers”—but a way to organize, architect, and visualize all the IT monitoring data you get into a coherent picture of your entire IT environment from bare metal to the cloud.

Luckily—the latest version of Operations Center coming out that can help you do this!

Operations Center, for those who aren’t familiar with it, is a great way to see the true impact of individual IT events on your entire IT service delivery and environment.  Oftentimes, tickets or reports from your monitoring tools are cryptic, at best.  What’s the impact of the monitoring event though?  Is it affecting your IT service delivery?  Or if you get 12 tickets thrown up by your monitoring tool—which is priority?  Which is affecting your end-users and their experience?  Which is affecting key systems?  Which may be causing security concerns? You need to add context and be able to see which events are causing the most issues to the overall state of IT—and Operations Center can do that.

Having said all that—for those who may already have Operations Center in their environment, what’s new or changed in the upcoming Operations Center 5.7 release?

  • New Dashboard themes

  • Adapter Prompt for new install

  • Control Center discovery

  • AppManager Add server

  • Server-side Alarm feature for Control Center

  • Dashboard data migration tool

Support/Compatibility Improvements

  • Liferay upgraded

  • Operations Center/Dashboard upgrade to Tomcat 7.0.62

  • Java 1.8.0_65 support for Dashboard and Operations Center server

  • Spectrum 10 support

  • Windows 10 support

  • Sybase 15.7 support

  • SolarWinds 10.7 support

  • AppManager 9.1 support

  • Google Chrome support

While this isn’t an exhaustive list of the changes happening to Operations Center, it should provide a good idea that Micro Focus is actively making improvements and enhancements to the platform.  Plus, there’s more integration with Micro Focus's own monitoring tool:  AppManager.

Needless to say, the quest for greater clarity and visibility around IT events and how they are affecting IT operations and service delivery is an on-going endeavor in most IT shops.  It looks like Operations Center 5.7 is a good update that can solve the dilemma.  If you are using AppManager, it’s time to consider adding Operations Center into your environment.  If you already have Operations Center—it’s definitely time to start planning your upgrade to the latest version!
