Summary
Scan is getting an "Execution Timeout Expired" error and failing.

Products
Fortify WebInspect

Environment
Fortify WebInspect (WI) 22.x

Situation
When scanning a website, a timeout is encountered and WI fails to perform the scan. The following error message is seen in the ScanLog.log located in "C:\ProgramData\HP\HP WebInspect\Schedule\logs\<scan_guid>\ScanLog" or "C:\Users\<user.name>\AppData\Local\HP\HP WebInspect\Logs\<scan_guid>\ScanLog":

Error SPI.Scanners.Web.Framework.DataManager.Providers.SQLServer.ScanMerge System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Execution Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

Resolution
The issue was resolved by making a configuration change using the following steps:

  1. Go to the "C:\ProgramData\HP\HP WebInspect" directory.
  2. Edit the ReportSetting.xml file.
  3. Change the variable ReportDatabaseTimeOut from the default 300 to a higher value such as 1000 and save the file.
  4. Open WI and scan again.
