Java update on Windows server

Hi,

Wanted to share a warning.
Without thinking I updated Java on one W2008 R2 that is running IDM.
This is normally no problem btw.
Because of the hands doing things faster than my mind i just accepted to
remove the old Java versions.

After rebooting the server eDir would not come up, I then renamed
dirxml.dlm and eDir did start.
Hmm, doesn't IDM have its own java... so I downloaded the latest patch.
Needed it anyway since I was on 5.
Installed it and now it works again.

Lesson learned: Never uninstall Java automaticly.

As a sidenote it crached the local Apache Directory Studio as well.

It does have its own Java
Designer, IDM and the Windows RL all embed their own JRE AFAIK

We did recently notice a problem with the patch 5 installer failing to copy across the JRE (and some other patch files) if it was launched from a folder that didn't have a short, space free path (like c:\TEMP)
We rolled back to pre-patch5 and re-applied the patch from c:\TEMP and all went fine.
Maybe this is a symptom of the same kind of problem.

Otherwise, possibly the OS level Java got overzealous and cleaned up something that was shared with the IDM bundled JRE. That is possible, but I'd expect more people to have complained about that.

    Odd.

That i'd expect as it doesn't ship with it's own JRE.
