Designer Lite

Designer is a huge application which takes a long time to load - but it has a lot of functionality. We seem to just accept this where competitor products work a lot faster.

I propose that NetIQ produce a 'Designer Lite' or a suite of different designer versions.

Identify the tasks that users are doing most frequently, and cut out everything that doesn't achieve that goal.

In my mind, this would essentially cut out things like UserApp/DAL/Workflow functionality, and allow driver development only. Or, split the designer into two versions, one that focuses on UserApp and the other focuses on Driver development, I tend to do either one or the other, not both at the same time.

  • There's an opion to select the plugins loaded by default, IIRC. Did not play with it too much, but you might to give it a try Perfs - General - Startup & Shutdown...
  • Don't know if a lite version would help, more of a total rewrite maybe. The Policy Builder is *so* extremely slow that I've resorted to editing XML directly using LDAP browsers instead, basically copying the policy code to an editor with DTD support, editing and copying back to LDAP. Designer doesn't utilize the modern HW we have, e.g. multicore i7 CPUs, 32 GB RAM, SSD etc.
  • I think the ability to pick a set of functionality, at the level that can be granulated, and let us pick the pieces to load to make a smaller/faster Designer. However due to interdepencies of bits and pieces that may be too hard.
