Summary
An error "Failed to setup a field encryption key" and/or "Unable to determine host role" is returned when configuring SecureData for Azure

Products
Voltage SecureData

Situation
An error is returned when configuring the SecureData appliance for Azure stating one or both of the following:

"Failed to setup a field encryption key"
"Unable to determine host role"

Cause
If either or both of the above errors are displayed, check the /opt/vsmgmt/logs/console.log on the Management Console server. If you see a message similar to the following, it means that an empty key_version tag is defined:

"Secret:Setup field encryption key in Azure|8|description=Failed to setup or fetch field encryption key with Azure. Azure key version is empty."

Resolution
Remove the empty key_version tag and try again. Azure will automatically fetch a valid key_version once it connects to the key vault, and will then populate the tag.
