How will climate change taxes affect IT businesses?

More and more organisations calling for climate taxes and levies. I was pretty shocked to find oil traders calling for carbon levies on oil fuels, but is this a 'sea change' (terrible pun, I know) or just rearranging deck chairs on the titanic? We need to internalise the environmental cost of our actions instead of pretending they don't exist, but it's going to be a massive economic drain.

I can see the cost of shipping hardware increasing, but I don't see this affecting cloud users too much. Does anyone know of any other impacts carbon taxation may have on IT businesses?

It used to be that anyone could report a software defect, even those unable to open a service request, and these reports were welcomed. There used to be links accessible on the main website where these reports could be submitted. This subject was discussed in this restricted thread: Reporting software defects.

Has Micro Focus changed its policy with respect to reporting software defects?

Are there any plans to once again provide this capability without requiring an SR?

The new header is a big improvement but it still needs some work. While it is much easier and faster to find forums that are product related, links to some forums have just disappeared.

Talk to a Technical Services Manager is one example. I have been unable to locate it following any of the links in the header. I suspect there are also a few other non-product related forums that got lost in the shuffle as well. There is a link to this Community Feedback forum that can be found if someone clicks on Get Started but that is not very intuitive.

Every public discussion forum should be accessible from the Discussions link in the header.

I would like to see a separate section for non product related forums.
The list of items displayed from the Discussions link is essentially a list of products. I would like to see the list expanded to provide additional keywords like names of products whose names have recently changed and those that have been recently discontinued.

Tagging Users and Content in Your Post

You probaby know you can tag a user like @COEST but now, when you type the "@" sign, you can also start typing in content like titles to other articles to link directly to them. If you start typing and scroll down the suggestions box, besides users, there is now a section for content. If you click on one of those it will insert the content link into your post like this when I do an @ sign at start typing "Fiscal" (@fiscal) it gives me some options. I choose one and it inserts the link into the post like this:

It's a way to easily tag people and link to other community content. Give it a try.

Hi Tarik,

Every once on a while I encounter an issue which, while trying to resolve, leads to another then another...

Today I opened an SR for an issue I couldn't resolve. I was provided with the information I needed but the issue wasn't resolved.

At the end of the day I received an email which said:

SR # 101304567021 has been closed. If this status change is incorrect, please contact us by telephone to correct the status.

I find it increasingly difficult to find the information I need on the Micro Focus website... telephone numbers in particular. A link in the email would be very helpful.

I managed to locate a Micro Focus Customer Support phone number (800-858-4000) and called it. The voice prompts have changed from what they used to be but I did press 1 as directed to reach support. A minute after connecting I was dumped into somebody's mailbox with no instructions about what to do.

I called back and repeated the process. This time, a minute after being connected with support, the line disconnected.

I called back a third time about twenty minutes later and actually spoke to someone.

This happened about 5:00 PM Provo time.

I know this is not how you expect customers to be treated. An issue can't be addressed until one becomes aware. I just want to make you aware.

How can I enable full text editing features in this forum?

Hi,

I noticed that I don't have menu items available here in the forum to enter code snippets.

That option is available, though, when I'm replying to some particular messages, but usually I don't have these additional menu items available here:

I seems like this feature hasn't been granted for my account, so I have to format code snippets manually, which becomes rather tedious from time to time.

How can I get full editing features enabled?

PS: I noticed that the code snippet generator in this forum doesn't provide syntax highlighting for the COBOL language. Perhaps someone at Micro Focus with the appropriate knowledge may provide a COBOL syntax highlighting plug-in for the HTML code snippet editor you're using?

Jim Henderson started working with computer networks in 1989 at a small university in Daytona Beach, Florida. Jim, a programmer of many years, wrote several utilities to customize the NetWare environment for the academic computer lab.

Joe Doupnik

Joe Doupnik is currently based within Computer Services of the University of Oxford in England where he works on research and development issues concerned with Novell Operating Systems and associated software. Much of his time is spent assisting Novell with their beta testing programs in the Open Enterprise Server and SLES environments and more direct work with teams on problems of mutual interest. He is also part of MindworksUK, a company which specializes in technical education and events related primarily to Novell’s products.

Prior to moving to Oxford Joe was Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Utah State University. He taught undergraduate systems and networking courses, amongst other subjects, and detailed networking and operating system internals at the graduate level.

Prof Doupnik has been involved with computer networking and communications for over twenty years. A few note he helped design the NASA Science Internet when networking was new. He has managed computer systems large and small for three decades and has used them since the venerable IBM 650.

His primary areas of expertise in IT are networking, operating systems, applications related to them, protocols, even device drivers. A theme running through them is making the apparatus work for us, and making it work better than before. For some years he has done extensive beta testing of major products with Novell and others, and works behind the scenes with organisations on techniques. He is one of the three founding members of the Novell Technology Transfer Partners (TTP) organization which for nearly 25 years couples selected academic sites with Novell engineers on technology issues.

He has used Unix since the mid-70's and has an original AT&T source code license. He has made many contributions to open source software as well as closed projects. Some recall him as the author of the best known open source MS-DOS Kermit communications program, which today is running on the International Space Station.

In public he gives varied courses on networking related material, operating systems internals, and even a course on writing Linux device drivers. He supports managers through listserver and similar mechanisms, and he does consulting. A decade of developing and managing a large student open computer lab has taught him a lot about human factors and systems behavior, and it persists to this day with his daily interaction with many systems managers around the world.

His technical training is in Electrical Engineering and Space Physics, with MSc and PhD from Penn State University funded mostly by NASA. He has worked in the field of ionospheric physics for many years and has a long list of publications and activities in that area. Today he, like many, is exploiting computer systems to do interesting things for people.

Since then, he's worked with Netware 2.2, 4.x, 5.x, and 6, as well as Cisco routers, AS/400s, Windows of every flavor, and various distributions of Linux. If pressed, he will admit he still knows i386 and z80 assembler code, Basic, Fortran, Foxpro, and Turbo Pascal, but his current affectations are Perl and Delphi, when time permits.

He currently uses SLED at work and openSUSE at home. He also uses Mac OS X on a daily basis and is prone to scavenging obsolete Apple hardware he considers too aesthetically pleasing to be scrapped. Some of this gets Linux installed on it.

Niclas is currently working as a networking consultant for Telindus Sweden AB (www.telindus.se) A swedish subsidiary in the Telindus Group. He's been consulting on networks since 1991, when he was first introduced to Novell NetWare 3.11. Whether Novell, Microsoft, Linux, Veritas, CA etc, Niclas doesn't care what it says on the box. Should a client need help, Niclas is willing.

He has been a Novell Support Forums Volunteer Sysop since June 2001 and is mostly active in the eDirectory, NetWare and Linux forums.

In whatever little time he has besides his work and the forums, he hangs out with his family and friends. Whenever things tends to just be to much, you can surely spot him in the car on a road somewhere close to you.

Niels is working as an IT-management Consultant at the municipality of Viborg, Denmark. He started working with IT in 2001, with the main focus in the Help Desk and hardware. He soon after started to work with Novell Software, NetWare 5.x and ZENworks 3.x at the time . The following years went back and fourth between administration and configuration of servers (Windows, NetWare, OES), applications deployment, network, DBA and is now the Lead Admin in a team concerning ZENworks 7/11, eDirectory, MS SQL and other endpoint management tasks. His main interest lies with ZENworks 11 and he uses most of the time in that array.

It turned out he could swim and has been the senior techie of the Novell environment ever since.

After getting a job offer from that company in 1999 I work now for them and I'm responsible for most of the Novell product concepts as well as all migrations and most of the 3rd level support for Novell products. Since last year (2007) we migrated our 250+ server Netware tree to OES linux and build most new solutions based on linux and virtualization technology.

To add value to my issues I often add steps to reproduce.

To do so, I'm using animated screencasts, so readers of my issues may quickly follow and grasp the situation I'm depicting without first being required to set-up a corresponding situation themselves.

Currently, the maximum size of images I can add to my messages is limited to 2 MB. That's forcing me to shrink some of my animations to a size that's hard to read, contradicting the benefits of such animations.

I would be a great help to raise the maximum image size allowed to 5 MB.

To keep server storage tidy, images might be subject to be pruned when a thread's final message becomes older than a year or two.

How?

1. A browser extension

2. It will add a new quick access panel to Octane page, inside which it offers shortcuts for daily missions

3. Select a user story or defect and then click the shortcut button, it will do the rest in an automated manner.

E.g.

Assign an owner to an item.

I have my team members listed in the quick access panel (Robo, Qubo)
By select an item and click the member's name in the quick access panel
It will do the rest in an automated manner:
1. Click on the owner field of the selected item
2. Type the name to filter the list

When using ALM Octane and trying to filter entity date fields, the “Before”, “After” and “Between” options on the date filter are limited to a specific date or dates.

So the suggestion is to add the following option to the Date filter:

X Days/Weeks ago or older/newer

For example, if I want to display aging defects then I will filter the Creation time field by:
8 Weeks ago or older

Another example: if I want to display the new defects created in the last week then I will filter the Creation time field by:
1 Weeks ago or newer

Similarly, we will add the following options to the filter too:

X Days/Weeks ahead or older/newer

In Micro Focus Connect, it would be useful if a user could see a tail of the log for a running connection.
Would also be helpful if the user could control the logging level.

In the Connect user interface:
The user would select a running connection to see the logging details.
A new details tab would be available: "Log".

The user would have some options on the Log tab:
1: Log level: [info, debug, trace].
2: Number of lines to display.
3: Auto load.
4: The log will be in Html format.

1: Log level.
The user chooses the logging level desired.
See log4j for descriptions of levels.

2: Number of lines to display.
Allows the user to load only the number of lines desired per load.
Each time the panel is refreshed, only a portion of the end of the log will be displayed.

3: Auto load.
If auto load is specified, the web socket will automactically push the log chages to the browser.

4: The log will be in Html format.
Using the log4j Html formatting capability to display the log in a Html format.
This allows the displayed log to be very easy to read.

Currently if a UFT customer wishes to use AI in his existing tests, he needs to update the script lines.

If a single TO is used in a 100 places, the customer needs to update all 100 script lines.

The suggestion here is to add a new AI Object to the OR and bind the "regular" TO to it, so that every time it is used the AI object will be used instead.

This solution is build from 2 parts:

Design time:
1. add an ability to add AI objects to the OR.
2. add ability to bind existing TO to and AI object
3. [Optional] add some automation to this process using inspect and the TO rectangle to find relevant AI object.
Run time: when ever an operation on a TO is invoked:
1. if its a simple click or type, perform it using AI object
2. else use AI to detect, then find the real TO in the detected area and perform the operation using the TO.

The motivation of the feature is to allow customer adapt existing scripts and ORs to AI rapidly.

Currently we are doing internal "tagging" party for massive image tagging, in order to enrich our AI model:

The whole group meets and manually tag application images for correct label (validating that detected button is indeed a button, adding label for UI objects that were not detected,etc...)

We suggest creating a social mobile game, where users will get small data bites for validation, such as "button" that was tagged as label, you can easily give feedback using "Tinder" like widget; "Correct / Wrong"

So the flow would be:

1. Our model detect a button as a button

2. User A will get this tagged button, and he will swipe for 'right' / 'wrong' tagging.

3. Each swipe operation will reward the user in game point.

4. He can decides to validate another image or to quit.

Then we can display a dashboard in floor monitor with hall of fame of users with most tags, high quality tags,rewards, etc...

Self healing of application nodes/servers within AWS

However there are scenarios where individual nodes/servers go off-line due to nodes crashing, high CPU or java process running the application has out of memory.

The idea here is to design a self/auto healing of application nodes/servers in the event of an failure.

Problem statement:
In On premises environment the company needs to maintain the infrastructure like storage, servers etc. Due to this the cost will be more and we will deviate from the innovations and fixing the infrastructure to make it work on our own and also it will be outdated with the latest technologies. The deployment also will be slow on some cases and to prevent the data loss we need to back up the data on regular basis which increases the cost and the maintenance as well.

Solution:
Stepping forward to cloud computing is one way to resolve maintenance of servers, storage and the infrastructures. There are many services are available in cloud computing and we can select whichever is suitable for the application. This will reduce the cost of our maintenance of our infrastructure.
