PPM running on Azure with Oracle DB on premises

Hi,

Last year our customer was discussing moving PPM to the Cloud and PPM has been marked to be moved in 2025 from on premises to the cloud.

I have a couple of questions because it seems that the Oracle RAC database will not be moved to the cloud.

1. What is your views on running PPM application in Azure and the PPM Database (Oracle) on premise?

2. Is option in question one (1) supported by OpenText for PPM?

3. Is migration capability from Oracle to PostgreSQL available or what would you suggest?

4. Is migration from full PPM On Premise to PPM Saas available?

Thanks for the assistance.

    Hi Alfred,

    1. What is your views on running PPM application in Azure and the PPM Database (Oracle) on premise?

You are very likely to run into performance problems, because you cannot guarantee a very low latency between the PPM DB and App Server, which is required for proper system performance.
It may work with acceptable performance on some pages, but basically all performance bets are off, and Support will NOT help if you face performance issues with this architecture.

    2. Is option in question one (1) supported by OpenText for PPM?

It is "functionally" supported, but not from a performance perspective. It is advised in the documentation to host App Server & DB Server on the same sub-network, so it'll really depends on how low of a latency you can manage to get between your cloud app server and your on-prem DB Server.

Isn't it an option to go with on-cloud Oracle DB (some RDS equivalent on Azure should be available hopefully), even if it means sacrificing RAC in the move?

    3. Is migration capability from Oracle to PostgreSQL available or what would you suggest?

Migration of Oracle to Postgres has only been done internally with some R&D environment so far (such as PPM Beta). The migration is not yet ready for production usage as it requires a lot of manual operations. And keep in mind that all custom validations with Oracle-only SQL syntax have to be rewritten manually, so the amount of effort really depends on how much custom SQL you've written in your PPM system (SQL Validations, Datasources, SQL in special commands, Reports, etc.), and how "oracle-syntax-specific" your SQL tends to be.

If that's the only option on the table, this is something we are opened to discuss support (and assist with), but such a move will come with big strings attached and a bumpy road ahead. Only to be used as a last resort.

    4. Is migration from full PPM On Premise to PPM Saas available?

Yes, and I would definitely advise you to go with this option. Our PPM SaaS teams have an extensive experience of moving existing large on-prem PPM customers to SaaS, and once you're on SaaS then the DB will not be your concern anymore. If you want to dig this option further, feel free to contact your sales rep or let me know and I'll share some contacts.

Thank you Etienne for the response, much appreciated.

There was an issue regarding Oracle and requirements from customer which Azure doesn't support. Will get the details and add to this discussion.
