Trouble mirroring between tape and disk

We're running DP7 and I've got an LTO6 drive that we do our typical backups to, we recently added a license for the disk TB backups and I'm having trouble mirroring on both for jobs.

I can run backups to tape fine, or backups to disk fine, but when I mirror them the backup just wont start.

I have let it run for 8 hours straight and eventually just cancelled it. It fails whether I am mirroring to the disk or mirroring to the tape instead.

It never initializes the tape library or moves a tape into it since it seems to be stuck on the backup to disk side of the house.

Help? :)

  • You are talkiing about the 'Mirror' option in the Destination tab of a backup, is that correct?

I know of people who have mirrored to different tape devices, not sure if I have ever seen it used the way you describe.  You should be able to do it, though, and, it makes some sense to do it this way

I was going to discount the licensing factor, but, now I am not so sure.  DP Capacity-based licenses look at the total available amount of storage space, so I guess that this would include the Formatted capacity of the Tape Media .  Usually, though, a Licensing problem will generate an error

Open a case with the response center (unless someone else out theer has other ideas) to have this problem looked at

  • Thanks for the reply Bob -- The only instance i've seen of it is here: http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Data-Protector-Support-and-News/different-data-retention-for-tape-and-disk-backup/td-p/5194593#.U-0umO90yUk

Yes -- I am talking about adding a mirror as a destination for a backup (So you end up with two tabs).

So I am certain its possible to do it. I am under maintenance with HP but was hoping it was a quick fix (I'm about to go out on training for a week and a half so I'm just troubleshooting things with no impact right now).

If anyone has any other ideas, would love to hear them!

We're hoping to use the disk backup to keep a short-term 'fast restore' repository so we don't have to get off-site tapes for our users. Since the archive flags are cleared during our daily incrementals, I can't run a second incremental to disk, so mirror is my only option from what I understand.

We're backing up to 2.5TB tapes, and have 4TB of disk backup licenses. If it's wanting to use 6.5 I could see the licensing be an issue, but since our tape media is smaller than our disk media.. I would hope that's not the case.
