(DP) Support Tip: Telemetry FAQ

What is telemetry good for?

It collects anonymized data from the Data Protector Cell Manager and uploads it to MicroFocus for further analysis. The goal is that product development gets a better understanding what customers are doing with the DP software. Based on this, the product will be optimized.

What kind of information is collected?

Data Protector collects high-level information, details can be found here: https://docs.microfocus.com/itom/Data_Protector:10.04/Use/Telemetry/CH_telemetry

How does it work?

The DP Application Server stores the telemetry configuration to the internal database.
At "DailyTelemetryTime" (Global Option with default of 02:00), the command "omnidbutil -telemetry" is triggered.
This writes a file with the name "telemetry_data" to C:\ProgramData\OmniBack\Config\Server\telemetry.
Each subsequent execution of "omnidbutil -telemetry" will update this file, but not trigger an upload of the data. Here you can see what is sent to MicroFocus.

Where does the "Telemetry Client Service" run?

It is automatically deployed with the Cell Console (CC) component on Windows and Linux (x64) systems, even if you have not subscribed for sending telemetry data. If there are multiple systems running the "Telemetry Client Service", only one client performs the upload to MicroFocus. The DP internal database is updated with the upload status and time.

Why is the "Telemetry Client Service" not limited to the cell manager?

Many cell managers do not have internet access for security reasons, but many systems that run the Windows GUI do have internet access.

Can I safely disable the "Telemetry Client Service"?

How can the "Telemetry Client Service" be disabled on a Windows system?

Go to the Windows Services context and set the "Startup Type" for "Data Protector Telemetry Client Service" to disabled.

How can the "Telemetry Client Service" be disabled on a Linux system?

# mv /etc/init.d/rc3.d/S50dp-telemetry /etc/init.d/rc3.d/s50dp-telemetry
# mv
/etc/init.d/rc5.d/S50dp-telemetry /etc/init.d/rc5.d/s50dp-telemetry

To what URL is the data sent to?

Where can I find log files?

Windows: C:\ProgramData\OmniBack\log\telemetry

Linux: /var/opt/omni/log/telemetry

How can I see if data has been submitted to MicroFocus?

A successful transmission looks like this in the telemetry-client-service.log:
