Backup Specification Management

Hi,

I've too many backup specification which are not used, but I'm only keeping them for restore purposes.

Is it possible to delete those unneeded backup specification and be able to restore data from backup specification which has been deleted.

Also how to query session inofrmation for backup specification which has been deleted.

Regards,

Yahia

  • Yahia,

to restore you start from an object.

The backup specs can be deleted. As long as your retention on the media has not passed and the media was not yet overwritten, you are capable of restoring the object.

Looking to the several Q you posted, I advise you to read the DP concept guides and/or hire a consultant for even a limited time to bring you up to speed. If you'd like to do it on your own in a test environment, consider to follow the basic training @ HPE education for DP

  • Hi Luc,

Thank you for your short response, appreciate if you provide answer for the following:

How to query session inofrmation for backup specification which has been deleted.

I think this feature needs to be added to Data Protector.

  • Yahia,

when a specification is deleted, the sessions is not thrown out.

This is something you can test asap in your environment.

You can even run a backup without saving the specification, and still you'll be able to trace a session for that action.

===> Yes. Backup specification is only used when you need to do/run a backup. For restore, you dont use these backup specification.

Yes - you can delete those unneeded backup specification. It is recommended to make things simple on your DP configuration.

Also how to query session inofrmation for backup specification which has been deleted.

=> You can use DP GUI so you can easily browse for backup information you need - session query, backed-up objects, etc even for those backup specification you've deleted.

    Hope this helps
