DP 9 VM restore to standalone ESXi host

Hello, community.

I'm trying restore VM backup created through vCenter to standalone esxi host. Restore to vCenter is working, but when I choose esxi host managed by the vCenter as client restore session fails with error.

DP is 9.07, cell is Virtual machine, MA agent is on physical host. What I have missed or what i'm doing wrong?

  • Hi Tim,

If seems you have backed up the VM from a vCenter, but try to restore directly to an individual ESXi host. Can you try to restore to the vCenter instead?

  • Yes, I restore VMs to vCenter with no issues. Also I could restore Vm directly to esxi from backup image created directly from esxi.
I'm doing DR testing, when we lost one of esxi with vCenter, but we have another esxi alive with cell server and we need to restore vCenter vm directly to esxi host.
  • Hi Tim,

And thanks for the clarification. What versions of Data Protector, vCenter and ESXi are used?

I've done this a few times in the past and it worked with one exception. It is not possible to restore to an ESXi host which is actively managed by a vCenter. You have to disconnect the management first. But there is a clear error message and instructions in the restore session. So this is something different.

  • Hello,  Sebastian.

    Thanks for details,

vCenter and ESXi versions are 6.0, DP is 9.07. I've tried to restore VM to standalone unmanaged ESXi host, but I've got error:

PS. I can create VM inside ESXi with credentials used for integration with DP.

  • Hi Tim,

There have been a few issues with VEPA restores that have been fixed in A.9.09_117. Especially more current ESX versions such as 6.0 U3.

Can you check for any possible errors (e.g. failed snapshot creation) in the ESXi activity monitor while the restore is performed?

    Regards,
    Sebastian Koehler

  • Hello.

I have the same problem. Do you can fix it?

    Thanks!

  • Hi , Hi ,

I'll test this in my environment and report back later this week.

    Regards,
    Sebastian Koehler

  • The patch 9.09 117 is for Disater recovery, the path Vepa is 116.
  • Hi ,

Just install 9.09 115 116 117. Is it working then?

I was able to test successful with ESX 6.0 U3a and Data Protector A.10.04 in my lab. Will now build a A.09.09_117 CM and test again.
