How do I force a client uninstall

Hi all,

we are going through a site move of all out servers. This is being rolled up with moving from Version 7 to 10. It's going ... sort of o.k. but I've hit a bit of a snag.

What we have done so far is

Set up new manager (V10)

Add a few clients/tape drives - all working fine

Moved some servers from old manager (V7) to new manager via client uninstall/re-install.

Moved the old server that was the V7 Manager - Uninstalled /reinstalled - all working find,

Then it was time for the next move and where the problem started. I can't uninstall the old client on the next server because it asks for the link to the V7 installation files ... which no longer exist because the old manager was uninstalled.

So - is there someway to force a client uninstall without access to the old install files?

  • Hi Kevin,

So you're talking about a client, not the cell server?
And you want to completely de-install this client, right?
Windows or Linux or .... ?

  • Hi Koen

Yep - I want to uninstall the client (The manager is already gone). This is Version 7.00 - Windows server 2008 R2.

You could Uninstall from "Programs and Features" in the Windows "Control Panel". In addition to that I would delete the OmniBack directories in "Program Files" and "ProgramData". And I would also clean the registry by deleting any keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard\OpenView\OmniBackII

Is that working fine? Please let us know.

    Thanks

  • Hi Koen,

afraid that does not work. When I start the uninstall from Control Panel I get a dialog box asking for the location of the old installation folder - which does not exist because the old DP manager was uninstalled set up as a client on the new manager. The message is

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable"...A file selector is presented asking for <server>\OmniBack\X8664\

So how on earth do I remove an orphaned client like this? I figure there has to be some CLI tool to do this but I have sent all day searching without success.

  • Kevin,

I have no immediate answer. I can tell you DP has no command line for this on Windows. Not sure what possibilities may exist on the Windows OS level. A Google search on the error message is giving some possible hints, including a manual cleanup of the registry which may possibly help.

But what about just importing the client into the new cell and update it using the new installation server? Is that failing too?

  • Note you may need to delete the former cell manager from the registry before being able to import. That is if the client was not exported from the old cell before removing the former cell server.

  • I really hate it when you follow a thread with exactly the problem you have ... only for it to end with a message saying "sorted it" and no clue as to how... So for those that follow this is what I did to get things working...

Uninstall not available as the old cell manager was gone - So I re-installed cell manager 10 (the version we are using but I guess it would be the same with 11), This was manually from downloaded install files - you cannot do a cell manager push as it's already in another cell.

I was not able to import into the new cell manager because it was already in another cell ... however because I had just installed 10 over the old version I was now able to manually uninstall...

THEN I was able to push a new version from the new cell manager and BINGO - we were in business.

Hope this helps some weary traveler on their journey.

  • Kevin,

Thanks so much for sharing your actions. Only this way the forum gets interesting for everyone indeed.

You're right about the CS install. It's simply the first install which is always from install media/files. The CS bits are even not available on an installaion server, so there's never a way to push a cell server.

De-installation was the right choice as you wanted to have a client only. Cleanup of the registry key which specifies the cell server name may (!!) possibly have resolved the import issue. But still, you wanted to have a client only and the only way to get rid of the CS part is de-installation.

Thanks again for sharing your story.
